This student hostel, located in the heart of Milan, seeks to recreate the size and scale of the neighbourhood of Via Rovello. The exterior appears monumental and is aligned with the existing buildings to enclose the block.
The three courtyards in the interior result in a spacious setting and seem to give at the building a more introverted character. The choice of placing the central courtyards is not only a typological aspect of our project but also a way to propose a different idea of shared space for the guests. Through these central voids, different visual axes have been developed to create visual relationships that focus on vitality and on the characteristics that make the hostel environment unique.
The building also seeks to express the concept of massiveness on a material level through thick walls covered with bricks that set the entire structure apart, both on the street and inside the courtyards. Even the concept of the wall is linked to the idea of the building’s vitality. The spaces created by the deep window openings are designed to induce people to stop and better appreciate the views created.
